What is People Also Ask?

people also ask - paa

People Also Ask (PAA) is a Google search feature that shows a set of related questions in an expanding box on the results page. Each question opens to reveal a short answer pulled from a web page, plus a link to that source. Winning a PAA slot puts your answer near the top of the page, above many of the traditional blue links.

What is SEO - PAA

Why PAA matters more in the AI era

PAA is worth understanding for a reason that goes beyond the box itself. The questions Google surfaces in PAA are a live map of how real people phrase their searches, and that same conversational phrasing is exactly what AI answer engines parse. When you structure a page to win PAA, you are also structuring it the way ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews prefer to read it: a clear question, a tight answer directly beneath it.

On client sites we treat PAA as a free research feed. Before we rewrite a page, we read its PAA questions to learn the sub-questions users actually ask, then we answer each one in a dedicated section. The same structure that earns a PAA placement tends to earn AI citations, because both reward the same thing: a direct answer to a specific question.

How the PAA box works

The box is dynamic. Click one question and Google often expands the box with more related questions, so it grows as users interact with it. Google selects the questions and the source answers using relevance, the popularity of similar queries, and the quality of the page providing the answer. Roughly half of all searches now show a PAA box, which is why a deliberate PAA strategy is no longer optional for competitive topics.

How to win a PAA placement

There is no guaranteed formula, but a few moves reliably raise your odds:

Answer the question first, then explain. Put a 40-to-50-word direct answer immediately under a question-style heading. Google lifts that block for the box. Burying the answer three paragraphs down loses the slot.

Use real question headings. Turn your H2s and H3s into the questions people actually type: “How does People Also Ask work?” beats “PAA mechanics.” This is a semantic triple in disguise: the heading is the subject and question, the paragraph below is the object Google extracts.

Add FAQPage schema. Structured Q&A helps Google match your content to a question. Note that Google retired the FAQ rich result in May 2026, but the structured data still helps Google understand the page and is actively extracted by AI engines, so keep it.

Mine the questions, then answer them. Tools like Semrush and AlsoAsked map the tree of PAA questions for a keyword. We pull that tree, then make sure the target page answers each branch in its own short section. Each answered branch is another chance to occupy the box.

Keep answers genuinely useful. Google rewards the page that satisfies the click. A thin answer that sends users straight back to the results (pogo-sticking) loses the placement over time. Clear, complete, and honest wins.

A practical PAA workflow we use

On a recent client page we ran the target keyword through AlsoAsked, found eight recurring questions, and rewrote the page so each one had its own question heading and a 50-word lead answer. Within weeks the page started surfacing for several of those questions in the PAA box. The mechanism is not magic: we simply gave Google a clean, extractable answer for each question it already knew people were asking.

If you want to see which of your keywords trigger PAA and which competitors occupy the box, Semrush Position Tracking filtered for the PAA feature is the fastest read. For the question tree itself, AlsoAsked is purpose-built.

FAQ

How do I get my site into the People Also Ask box? Answer the target question in 40 to 50 words directly under a question-style heading, add FAQPage schema, and make sure the page genuinely satisfies the search. Google lifts clean, direct answers from pages that already rank for the related query.

Is PAA the same as a featured snippet? No. A featured snippet is a single answer shown at the very top of results. PAA is an expanding box of multiple related questions, each with its own answer and source. A page can win both, and the optimization tactics overlap.

Does winning PAA help my AI search visibility? Indirectly, yes. The question-and-direct-answer structure that wins PAA is the same structure ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews prefer when extracting answers, so PAA-optimized pages tend to be more citable.

What tools show PAA questions? Semrush Position Tracking surfaces which keywords trigger PAA and who occupies the box. AlsoAsked maps the full tree of follow-up questions, which is ideal for planning content sections.
