What is AI Visibility?

AI visibility is a measure of how often your brand is mentioned and cited as a source in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews answers. You measure it as a share of appearances across many repeated queries, not as a single rank.

What is AI visibility: chat bubbles where some answers glow with the Stradiji S mark

In classic search, we ask, “What position are we in?” That question doesn’t work for AI answers. The same question can produce a different list every time, even in the same engine. The better question: “If we asked this 100 times, in how many answers would our brand appear, and in how many would we be a source?”

Why AI visibility matters for your brand

More and more buying journeys start with an AI answer: “Who’s the best enterprise X provider?” “A or B?” “Is X legit?” If your name isn’t in those answers, your odds of making the shortlist drop. And you won’t see the loss in Search Console. There isn’t even an unclicked search result to point to.

Measuring it is harder than it looks. In a study by SparkToro and Gumshoe published in January 2026, about 600 volunteers ran 12 identical prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google’s AI nearly 3,000 times. The odds of getting the same brand list twice were under 1 in 100. The odds of the same list in the same order were about 1 in 1,000 (Search Engine Land, January 2026). The takeaway: measure repeat presence, not rank.

How AI visibility works

Visibility builds in three layers, and you should measure each one on its own:

  1. Mentions. Does your brand name appear in the answer? This often comes from the model’s memory and how it understands your category.
  2. Citations. Is your page in the source list under the answer? This happens when the model searches the web (grounding) and picks your passage.
  3. Narrative. Does the model describe you in the right category, with accurate facts and in a favorable light? Being visible and described wrong can cost more than not showing up.

AI visibility is measured as a share of repeated answers, not as a rank

AI results are personalized. Location, language, chat history and model version all change the answer. One screenshot proves nothing. Run the same question set on different days, in more than one engine, with search on and off.

The SEO and GEO connection

AI visibility doesn’t replace SEO. It adds a new measurement layer on top of it. A page that can’t be crawled can’t be cited, and a brand nobody knows doesn’t get mentioned. In SEO, we track rankings and clicks. GEO adds mention rate, citation rate and narrative accuracy.

We saw this with our own brand. In August 2026, we asked Gemini about Stradiji with web search off. It didn’t recognize us and confused the name with Stradivarius. With search on, it described us correctly. Our site was visible, but we weren’t in the model’s memory. If you don’t separate those two cases, your visibility numbers will mislead you.

What we’ve seen in the field

Across the more than 100 websites we audited in seven countries through September 2026:

  • Nearly 9 in 10 had at least one of the three doors of AI visibility (reach, recognize, believe) closed.
  • About 3 in 4 didn’t explicitly allow AI crawlers.
  • About two thirds lacked a citation-ready Q&A structure.

A practical AI visibility playbook

  1. Build a question set. Pick 20 to 25 questions close to a buying decision: category, comparison, pricing, trust and “best” questions.
  2. Measure repeatedly. Run each question in at least two engines, on different days, more than once. Record the share of appearances, not the position.
  3. Separate mentions from citations. If you’re named but someone else is the source, the fix is on the content and passage side. If you’re not named at all, the fix is on the entity and reputation side.
  4. Test with search on and off. If you’re unknown with search off, work on entity signals. If you’re not cited with search on, work on your pages.
  5. Read the competitor list. The brands the model suggests instead of you show which category it put you in.
  6. Report monthly. AI answers swing. A one-week change means little. The trend over months is what counts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rank No. 1 in AI answers?

No, at least not in any lasting way. AI answers are personalized and change with every query. What you should measure is how often your brand is mentioned and cited across repeated queries.

How do you measure AI visibility?

Run a fixed question set in more than one engine, on different days, again and again. For each answer, log whether your brand was mentioned, which of your pages was cited and how you were described. Tools such as GeoGenie automate this repeated measurement.

How is AI visibility different from SEO visibility?

SEO visibility measures your position and clicks in search results. AI visibility measures whether you’re mentioned in the answer and listed as a source. The second rests largely on the first.

How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

It depends on the question. When the model searches the web, page fixes can show up within weeks. When it answers from memory, change takes months and needs off-site reputation.
