What is AEO? (Answer Engine Optimization)

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of shaping your content so an answer engine picks it as the direct answer to a question and cites it. An answer engine is any system that replies with one answer instead of ten links: Google featured snippets, voice assistants, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

What is AEO: the passage an answer engine picks as its source

People often use AEO and GEO interchangeably. Here is how we split them. AEO works at the page and passage level: will this answer paragraph get cited? GEO manages your brand’s overall visibility in AI engines, including your reputation off your own site.

Why AEO matters for your brand

An answer engine does not list ten links. It writes one answer and places a few sources under it. If you are not one of those sources, a page-one ranking does not save you. We see the same pattern on enterprise sites again and again: the company is the best expert on the topic, but the answer sits on page 20 of a PDF, behind a product tab or in the middle of a 2,000-word post.

In July 2026, the only bank page cited in Google’s AI answer to “best credit card” in Turkey was Yapı Kredi’s Worldcard. It did not win by praising itself. It documented that Worldcard was the first and only Turkish card named to The Banker’s list of the world’s 10 most valuable credit cards. That is AEO in one example: put the answer and the proof where a machine can lift them easily.

How AEO works

An engine lifts a passage, not your whole page. AEO rests on four practical rules:

  1. Answer first. Put the answer in the first paragraph under the title, in a form that makes sense on its own. Models weigh the title and the first few hundred characters of the body, so don’t open with a date stamp, a category label or an image.
  2. Stand-alone passages. The first sentence under every subhead answers that subhead’s question. A passage should still make sense when it is lifted into someone else’s answer.
  3. Question-and-answer structure. Turn real customer questions into subheads and answer them briefly. A three- to five-question FAQ block on the page helps. A separate page for every question does not.
  4. Verifiable proof. Keep the source of a number, the name of an award or the date of a case in the same paragraph. Claims without proof don’t get cited.

How AEO works: engines cite a passage with the answer and proof, not a whole page

The SEO and GEO connection

AEO is not a separate discipline. It is core SEO applied to AI surfaces. A page that cannot be crawled, indexed or loaded quickly will not have any passage cited. Google limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023 (Google Search Central, August 2023), yet Q&A structure is still one of the easiest formats for AI answers to lift. That is why we don’t recommend removing FAQ sections or FAQPage schema.

AEO also has limits. Models pick most of the brands they recommend before they search, from memory. A perfect passage won’t get cited often if your brand is missing from that shortlist. We cover that side in What is GEO?

What we’ve seen in the field

Through September 2026, we audited more than 100 websites in seven countries with the GEO Score Card. About two thirds lacked a citation-ready Q&A structure. The three mistakes we see most:

  • The answer sits at the bottom of the page, inside a “Conclusion” section.
  • Subheads are slogans (“Future-ready solutions”), not questions.
  • Numbers have no source or date, so the model cites another site’s sourced version instead.

A practical AEO playbook

  1. Build a question inventory. Collect the 20 to 30 questions your sales and support teams hear most. Merge them with question queries from Search Console.
  2. Give every question one owner page. If five pages answer the same question, you compete with yourself. One page answers, the others link to it.
  3. Rewrite your openings. Turn the first paragraph of your 10 highest-traffic pages into “question, clear answer, proof.”
  4. Mark up the structure. Use FAQPage schema that matches the visible Q&A exactly, and Article schema with a named author for articles.
  5. Measure. Ask the same questions in at least two engines on different days and log which of your pages gets cited.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they share a foundation. SEO gets a page found and ranked. AEO gets the answer on that page selected and cited. AEO does not work without good SEO.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO works at the passage and page level: is your answer paragraph cited? GEO works at the brand level: does the model know and recommend you? Plan them together.

Do I need FAQPage schema for AEO?

You don’t need it, but it helps. What matters is the visible Q&A content. Add schema only when it matches that content exactly.

Where should I start with AEO?

With the first paragraph of your 10 highest-traffic pages. Does the answer sit there, on its own, with its proof? If not, that is the first fix.
