SEO-Friendly URLs: 8 Rules and the One That Matters Most

How to write SEO-friendly URLs in 2026: hyphens, lowercase, no dates, no parameters. Plus the rule most teams break: changing URLs without a plan.

SEO-friendly URLs cover, 8 rules and the one that matters, Mert Erkal, Stradiji

Last updated: Nov. 6, 2026

Summary

An SEO-friendly URL is short, lowercase, uses hyphens between words and describes the page in a few plain words. Google recommends hyphens over underscores and readable words over ID numbers. The rule that matters most, though, is stability: a good URL that never changes beats a perfect URL that moved without redirects.

8 rules for SEO-friendly URLs

  1. Describe the page in 2 to 5 words. /seo-friendly-urls/, not /blog/2026/11/the-ultimate-guide-to-seo-friendly-urls-for-beginners/.
  2. Use hyphens. Google’s documentation recommends hyphens instead of underscores to separate words.
  3. Use lowercase. Google treats /Blog/ and /blog/ as different URLs.
  4. Leave dates and years out. Put “2026” in the title if you want, not in the slug. You will update the page next year.
  5. Drop filler words. “and,” “the,” “for,” “a” add length, not meaning.
  6. Avoid content parameters. If ?id= or ?sort= changes what the page shows, you are creating duplicate URLs.
  7. Keep folders shallow. Two levels are enough for most sites: /our-services/geo-consulting/.
  8. Never change a live URL without a 301. More on this below.

How much do URLs still matter for rankings?

Less than most checklists suggest. Keywords in the URL are a small signal. And since Jan. 23, 2025, Google shows only the domain in mobile results, not the path, so the URL no longer works as snippet copy on mobile. Desktop still shows the domain plus breadcrumb.

Where URLs still earn their keep: readability when people share links, clean site structure, and AI answers. ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews often show the source link. /what-is-robots-txt/ tells a reader what they will get. /p?id=4471 does not.

The expensive mistake: changing URLs

To Google, a new URL is a new page. Links, citations and rankings move to it only through a proper redirect.

  • Redirect each old URL to its closest new URL in one hop.
  • Do not send everything to the homepage. Google may treat that as a soft 404.
  • Update internal links. Do not rely on the redirect.
  • Keep redirects for as long as possible. Google says generally at least one year.

From our own site: On multilingual WordPress sites, a plugin update can change URL structure without warning. We spot-check a handful of key URLs, hreflang and canonical tags after every plugin update. Changing more than a few URLs? Use our SEO migration checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a URL SEO-friendly?

It is short, lowercase, hyphen-separated and describes the page. Both people and search engines can tell what the page is about from the URL alone.

Should I put keywords in my URL?

Yes, naturally, but do not expect a big ranking lift. The main benefit is clarity for readers.

Hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Hyphens. Google recommends them because underscores can join words together.

Should I change old URLs to make them SEO-friendly?

Usually not. A working URL with links and rankings is worth more than a prettier one. Change it only with a redirect plan.

The one thing to do this week

Pull your top 10 pages by impressions in Search Console and check their URLs against the box above. Note problems, but do not change anything yet. Plan the redirects first. Planning a bigger change? Start with the checklist or talk to us about SEO consulting.
